Weeks ahead of the show, an air of anticipation came to towns across America as advance men, wielding buckets of paste and long-handled brushes, pasted huge, bright circus posters over faded auction and political signs and placed cards in store windows within a mile radius of the circus site.

Boys and girls stood before them and gawked, as they inhaled the pungent smell of fresh paste. What better way to relive the nostalgia of those bygone shows than to collect bright, and often artistic, circus posters. Circuses played on the fantasies of the common man.

They give us a detailed portrait of the heyday of the American circus, spanning from the time of P. The vivid images and persuasive words reflect the important role outdoor advertising played for circuses, which flourished as vital forms of cultural entertainment across the country. The circus spent more money for advertising than on any other component of its operation, and the circus poster was the most important part of its advertising effort. At the turn of the twentieth century, the arrival of the circus was an eagerly anticipated event.

The poster was the basic marketing tool for circus entrepreneurs who were quick to take advantage of advances in color lithography. The threefold task of the poster was selling the circus, date, and feature available for a single day. Rural towns and cities were saturated with colorful bombastic lithographic images advertising the circus as it moved from coast to coast.

Originally acquired by the Cincinnati Art Museum as historical documents, the circus posters bring back to life the golden years of this American form of entertainment at the birth of outdoor advertising.

AP — All Ron Berger wanted was to install a door between two buildings. Instead, much to his astonishment, he opened a window into the early history of Durand on Labor Day weekend when he cut a hole in the wall separating the family business from the property next door to accommodate an expansion. Initially baffled by the green and brown colors he spotted on a long-buried wall, Berger assumed they must be old water stains.

But he eventually uncovered enough of the wall to recognize he was looking at the image of a buffalo, with a puff of steam rising from its nostrils, charging right at him on a grassy plain. Further inspection, by removing electrical outlets along the wall and shining flashlights into the gap behind, revealed the vibrant colors extended the length of the wall. By the time Berger was done excavating and researching, he had unearthed a 9-foot-high by foot-long, multi-sheet, full-color paper lithograph circus poster advertising the Great Anglo-American Circus and Menagerie performing in Durand on Aug.

His sisters Lori Snapp and Sharon and Karen Berger, who own the business, supported the decision even though they knew it would delay the expansion project.

Since the s, the family-owned Corral Bar has been serving drinks and hearty meals to diners in the small town of Durand, Wisconsin. But the property has a much longer history: it sits on land that was first surveyed in and has been home to a succession of stores, barber shops and saloons. This remarkable discovery came to light in , when Berger embarked on a project to expand the Corral Bar and Riverside Grill—as the joint has been known since , when a full-service kitchen and dining area were added—into an adjacent property.

Over the following weeks, he gradually uncovered an entire circus scene: lions, giraffes, sea creatures, elephant riders and aerialists, all meant to entice locals to the Great Anglo-American Circus.

Founded on April 30, c. To us, Satan is the symbol that best suits the nature of we who are carnal by birth—people who feel no battles raging between our thoughts and feelings, we who do not embrace the concept of a soul imprisoned in a body. He represents pride, liberty, and individualism—qualities often defined as Evil by those who worship external deities, who feel there is a war between their minds and emotions.

All Gods are thus externalized forms, magnified projections of the true nature of their creators, personifying aspects of the universe or personal temperaments which many of their followers find to be troubling. Worshipping any God is thus worshipping by proxy those who invented that God. Since the Satanist understands that all Gods are fiction, instead of bending a knee in worship to—or seeking friendship or unity with—such mythical entities, he places himself at the center of his own subjective universe as his own highest value.
